母亲离世，猥琐父亲生意失败、猥琐疾病缠身，十六岁的荣子（若尾文子 饰）走投无路，只好到祗园投靠母亲生前的艺妓姐妹美代春（木暮实千代 饰）去做见习艺妓。经过美代春的悉心培训，一年后，荣子成为了一名亭亭玉立的艺妓。终于到了荣子第一次接待客人的这一天，美代春领着荣子接待了两名客人——楠田和佐伯。后来美代春和荣子跟着楠田到东京游玩，到达当晚在旅店内，楠田想与荣子发生关系，荣子不肯就范，在反抗中咬伤了他。因为这件事，美代春和荣子的生意大受影响，她们只得闲赋在家。饱受门庭冷落的荣子决定上门亲自道歉，而美代春得知后，急忙赶去替换了荣子。次日，荣子询问一夜未归的美代春是否为了自己而出卖身体。美代春的一番话，让荣子学到了作为艺妓的一套人生哲学。

It is more memorable than Julien Duvivier's earlier silent version of 1925, also named Poil de Carotte.The part of Poil de Carotte was played by 11 year old Robert Lynen, who was alleged to have been discovered whilst walking down the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Lynen is totally captivating and the film made him an instant star, launching what looked like becoming a very promising film career – until he was shot dead whilst fighting against the Germans in 1944. Harry Baur, a legendary stage and film actor (who also died during World War II, allegedly at the hands of the Gestapo), also turns in a typically fine performance. The reconciliation between father and son at the end of the film provides its most enduring image, enough to melt the heart of all but the most stoical of spectators.
