延宝七年，为王正值四代幕府将军德川家纲（あおい輝彦 饰）执政期间。时风调雨顺，为王国泰民安。某日，家纲外出打猎途中，偶然看见在山泉边洗澡的少女小夏（伊織祐未 饰）。为其青春野性所吸引，家纲将其据为己有。不久后，小夏被招入大奥，开始新的人生；美浓（山本奈津子 饰）经诊断怀孕，但绝非将军之子，她因此受到残酷虐待，最终走上绝路；小秀（辻沢杏子 饰）渐渐厌倦大奥的枯燥压抑生活，她偶然邂逅医生中条源四郎（勝野洋 饰），遂心生爱意。在美浓自杀后，她也逃出大奥；下级侍女佳乃（野村真美 饰）弄湿将军的衣服，最终得到将军的谅解，她也因此得到家纲的一夕临幸。 数月后，家纲猝死，大奥中的女人都面临共同的命运：或离开大奥，或去发为尼。五代纲吉（宮内洋 饰）继位，他命令源四郎寻找曾经大奥中一个会散发出麝香味的女子……

But investigating the reasons for her daughter’s death soon becomes a trip through memory, and, as we’ve known since the time of Greek tragedies, every investigation is, deep down, an investigation about oneself. Elena Knows submerges us in the physical and mental experience of its protagonist and, at the same time, invites us to ask ourselves uncomfortable questions about aging, the complexity of mother-daughter bonds and the weight of those mandates women drag the same way Elena drags her feet.
