正直善良的藤野兆治（高仓健 饰）因与上司发生分歧离开了工作多年的函谷船坞，水草在此之后他和妻子茂子（加藤登纪子 饰）自食其力，水草开了一家小酒馆。当初工厂里的朋友岩下（田中邦卫 饰）、秋本（小松正夫 饰）等人经常来此喝酒聊天，小酒馆内充满欢快温馨的气息。兆治早年的恋人小夜（大原丽子 饰）如今是神谷牧场的女主人。曾经贫困潦倒的生活迫使两个相爱之人分开。时间并未冲淡留在彼此心中的情感，兆治和小夜始终依恋着对方，只因各自的家庭他们只有将这份感情深深埋藏。一场大火烧毁神谷牧场，为婚姻所苦的小夜终于解脱，远走札幌。即便如此，对恋人强烈的思念仍促使她打去一通通无言的电话……根据山口瞳同名小说改编。
