回复 :原作は山口瞳の第48回直木賞受賞作。原作では主人公は電機メーカーに勤める宣伝部長だが、映画では洋酒メーカーの宣伝部員（山口瞳が当時サントリー宣伝部に勤めていた）に置き換え、主人公が直木賞を受賞するまでを描いている。それまで男性アクションで定評があった岡本喜八が、この1作で戦中派の屈折した心理を見事に捉え、本格的に評価された。ストーリーは、洋酒メーカーの宣伝部員というしがないサラリーマンの“才能のないだらしない奴が一生懸命生きること“の大変さを、自分史や戦後史と重ね合わせながら描く。岡本の演出は、主人公と妻との若い頃のロマンスを、「残菊物語」にたとえて、下駄と靴だけの合成アニメーションで描いたり、父親の事業の盛衰を書き割りのセットやアニメーションで描いたりと自由奔放をきわめる。また主人公の背後にいる同僚をストップモーションにして、カメラの背後でもう一人の自分が画面内の自分が置かれた立場を分析してみせるシーンなど、ナレーションの使い方も秀逸。
