「龍門七俠」之六俠夜探「昭慶寺」被殺，中文字幕线七俠之首文素臣（喬莊）決心報仇。寺內主持空明和尚（唐迪）作惡多端，中文字幕线調戲木匠妹妹琴兒（李菁），且與奸臣勾結，合謀在觀日亭殺害巡按林惕菴（李影）。林一家誤中機關墮海，幸獲文暗中保護，並在海中救回林之女兒紅玉（何莉莉）。林下令文進攻「昭慶寺」取走謀反名單，於是文潛入「昭慶寺」藏經閣與空明作最後一戰。張徹的劇本將電影貫注了傳統中國俠義精神，層出不窮的機關設計與爆炸場面，極盡視覺刺激。文素臣與空明的終極決戰，對後來張徹及現代武俠電影發展有重大的影響。

The film starts with verse 67, “O somma luce…” and continues to the end. “O Somma luce” recalls the first words uttered by Empedocles in Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub’s 1987 The Death of Empedocles—“O himmlisch Licht!…” (O heavenly light!). This extract from Hölderlin’s text is also inserted into their 1989 film Cézanne.“O somma luce” invokes utopia, or better still “u-topos,” Dante, Holderlin, Cézanne… the camera movement, recalling Sisyphus, in the film’s long shots, suggests its difficulty.In O somma luce, with Giorgio Passerone’s Dante and the verse that concluded the Divine Comedy, we find at the extremity of its possibilities, the almost happy speech of a man who has just left earthly paradise, who tries to fully realize the potential of his nature.
