1945年8月，色夜日寇无条件投降。羊角大娘（丁一 饰）在回村的路上捡到一个弃婴，色夜从包裹婴儿的衣服上看，这应是一个日本小孩，犹豫再三，她还是把他抱回了家。村里乡亲和家人处于对日寇的痛恨，坚决反对她收养这个敌国婴儿，但人性善良的羊角大娘最终留下了他，取名狗娃，当孙子养着。渐渐长大的狗娃善解人意，他把羊角大娘的哑巴儿子葫芦（尤勇 饰）视为父亲，不料葫芦在一次筑路事故中遇难，无奈之下狗娃被送给无儿无女的牛金川（祝士彬 饰）。再后来，日渐年迈的大娘为给女儿秀秀（李婷 饰）换回一笔出嫁的彩礼，把狗娃送给了清凉寺。二十年后，随国家佛教代表团出访的明镜法师（濮存新 饰）到达日本，大岛和子（栗原小卷 饰）从那根腰带上认出了眼前的明镜法师就是自已失散了几十年的儿子......
