关连长（石挥 饰）领导着中国人民解放军八连，为了投入到保卫祖国解放人民的战斗中去而进行着艰苦的训练。然而，关连长和他手下的士兵们都没有接受过太多正规的教育，因此在训练的过程中遇到了很多的困难和挫折，幸运的是文化教员（俞仲英 饰）一直都在耐心的向他们提供帮助。残酷的战争拉开了序幕，八连的上上下下都做好了准备投身到了激烈的战斗中去。在一场战役中，关连长震惊的发现敌方的驻守点竟然是一间孤儿院，里面有数百名无辜孤苦的孩子。为了保证孩子们的生命安全，关连长依然放弃了使用枪炮，手持大刀同敌人展开了殊死搏斗。
