35岁的玛格丽特有暴力行为史，小说和母亲克里斯蒂娜同住。克里斯蒂娜55岁，小说脆弱且幼稚，她把自己钢琴家梦想的破灭归咎于长女玛格丽特。在争吵中，怒不可遏的玛格丽特打了克里斯蒂娜，这导致了法律的介入。在等待审判期间，玛格丽特被禁止与母亲接触或靠近母亲家100米范围内。这反而加剧了她与家人亲近的愿望，每天，玛格丽特都会出现在这个100米的界限上，看望她12岁的妹妹玛丽昂，并给她上音乐课。
